Heaven is on earth

Joseph is a 53 years old hungarian-roots aussie man, living in the woods near Nimbin: Australia’s capital of cannabis counterculture. Nimbin is a dreamlike spot on earth, surrounded by the mind-blowing subtropical rainforest, a everywhen where time flows slowly, puff after puff. Ever since the Aquarius Fe- stival held in 1973, Nimbin lived anarchic towards worldwide marijuana prohibition, which made its soil fertile for the sett- lement of hippie culture and lifestyle throughout the years.

In December 2018 artists Noemi Diamantini and Anna Biesuz moved to Australia for travelling the country and ended up living in Nimbin for a month, hosted at Joseph’s in the bush. Sharing the space with Joseph exposed us to fragments of how an hippie way of existing is like, which happens to be intimately human. Besides, living with Joseph meant to be part of the community fever in Nimbin, particularly in the oneiric Oasis Café; where time stretches and gets more room to be filled with groo- vy music, fantastic chattings, enjoying weed and togetherness. Here’s the portrait of a dreamer, a hopeless adventurer who embraced wandering to seek his own heaven on earth. Throughout the documentation of the rituality of his everyday, we’d like to show the dreamlike of a man, mirroring the reality of an outsider society like Nimbin.
